"Where perception reaches its limits, the landscape becomes experience"

Artist statement

The experience of the sublime in nature lies at the core of my practice. I am drawn to moments when the natural world reveals its essential dimensions — the primal architecture of the Earth, the presence of the living world, the cosmic depth of the landscape, and the sense of the infinite. In these moments, the landscape becomes more than a view. It becomes an encounter with forces that transcend the human — time, matter, light, and the immensity of the natural world. My photographs explore these forces and this experience described as the sublime: that profound emotion born of encountering a nature that transcends us. Through carefully composed images and monumental formats, the landscape becomes immersive — both a physical presence and a space of contemplation.

Biography

Philip Richard is a French fine art photographer based in Provence. His work explores the experience of the sublime in nature through large-scale photographic works. His practice is rooted in a dual background that combines scientific research and artistic exploration. Early in his career, he conducted field studies on extreme weather phenomena, developing a sustained interest in the physical processes that shape nature. This scientific perspective continues to inform his visual approach, particularly in his attention to structure, scale, and light. Over the years, he has travelled extensively across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and lived several years in the American West. These environments have played a decisive role in shaping his perception of space and his engagement with vast, open landscapes. His work focuses on large-scale formats, designed to create an immersive experience in which the viewer is physically engaged with the image. Moving beyond representation, his photographs explore the tension between beauty and immensity, inviting a direct encounter with the forces that shape the natural world. His work has been exhibited and recognised internationally.

What happens before, during and after the creation of an image ? Conceptualize... feel.... put into perspective...so that each image finds its meaning. These are such moments that I reveal here :
